Processes: Fermentation, boiling, etc.
Tools: Containers, droppers, plastic wrap, etc.Timeline: 2~4 weeks

This experiment was designed to test how the natural dyes expressed on the Kombucha leather. The symbiotic cultures of Kombucha are prepared with different liquids. Instead of dying the bio-leather after harvesting and drying, this experiment used the dyed liquid to ferment the Kombucha leather. In the process, boiling the liquid and thoroughly sterilizing the equipment is essential. The exciting thing is that Kombucha has its preferred recipe. They performed differently in each solution and provided a wide range of scents during the fermentation.

Materials: Mycelium
Ingredients: Coffee grounds, grains, etc
Processes: Fermentation, boiling, etc.
Tools: Molds, plastic wrap, etc.Timeline: 2 months

Mycelium grows into the form of its food. This experiment was about testing what ingredients as the food for mycelium that could hold and strengthen the shape of a dome. Coffee grounds and rice brans were the testing ingredients. According to the experiment, both elements allowed the mycelium to hold the form of a 23 inches dome. But the domes were so fragile and crispy that they would collapse in a tiny shear force. Presumably, the thickness of the food layer and the mold’s one-sided ventilation limited the growth of mycelium. The mushrooms on the surface of the domes were accidental and beautiful surprises.

Year: 2022Arvin Shih is a designer from Taiwan and is currently based in New York, the United States. She majored in Architecture in her undergrads and turned her head to the Communications Design field for her graduate studies due to her enthusiasm for visualization. Her design strategy is flexible in different aspects and has a variety of expressions. She is especially interested in the sense of light and shades in spaces, which could be noticed in her projects. Recently, she has been focusing on motion design, data visualization, and the development of trans materials.

This project is based on an imagined future scenario where the environment eventually collapses. Pollution forces people to depend on the mycelium shelter system so they can live outside the megacity, which is not affordable for most humans in poisonous nature. The community in this situation is totally different, and so is the role of human beings. The shelter they lived in is not only protecting them from poisonous environments but also provided the daily essentials of their life. The system of this shelter is bio-based. To keep the mycelium active, it must be transferred from one place to another. The mycelium will strengthen the main structure, purify the air and some water, and provide food. And another main character is the kombucha that provides bio-fabric for human usage and the cover layer of the shelter’s opening. The skeleton of the shelter, left behind in every transition, will form the new landscape and keep purifying the environment little by little. This project aims to draw attention to the impacts of the Anthropocene and provoke the imagination of a tangled lifestyle that relates to or even depends on non-human creatures.

Abby Shuster is an artist and designer living in Brooklyn, New York. She is an MFA candidate at Pratt Institute, working towards a degree in communications design. She previously received a BA from the University of Vermont, with dual studies in sociology and applied design. Her background in sociology continues to inform her design practice. Abby’s main focus is on the re-earthing of aesthetics, looking at ways the centering of joy and abundance in aesthetic choices are congruent with channels for sustainability. Using a feminist based practice, she seeks to interrogate social structures that underscore mainstream sustainability narratives, making visible the ways in which alternative narratives can uplift marginalized voices. Her methods range from material exploration, to print media, to digital visualizations.
She recently participated in the Pratt X DSKD design challenge, collaborating with a group of international students to imagine covid-era endemic design solutions. She is the recipient of multiple merit based scholarships including awards from the Package Designers Council, the Coyne Family Foundation for visual communications, and the Longyear Scholarship for Art and Design. Abby’s work Saturated was recently displayed in Pratt’s Graduate Inquiries Exhibition.

The fashion sector is notoriously one of the least sustainable industries worldwide, contributing in enormity to the degradation of the planet. Fletcher and Tham summarize, “Each stage within the lifecycle of fashion is associated with environmental and social costs” (2019). This project harnesses the power of both Kombucha leather and natural fabric dying to reimagine a woven bag.
A culture surrounding high-end bags has equated the purses with a status symbol. At the same time, bags are one of the first objects invented by humans. Ursula Le Guin even argues that carrying a bag is perhaps one of the most human things we can do— utilitarian in its purpose of gathering, saving, sharing— ubiquitous across cultures, a method for survival (Le Guin, 1986). So, although their significance within society has changed astronomically, the bag’s utilitarian nature renders it an object I don’t soon expect will go defunct.
People need bags. Instead of encouraging people to stop using bags, I propose we lean into the theme of material connection to reimagine what an ethically and sustainably produced— but still aesthetically pleasing bag might look like.
I imagine a bag that utilizes 2 different material metamorphosis techniques. First, it harnesses Kombucha leather, growing large planes on baking sheets. The leather is dried, then cut into strips. The strips are then sewn between layers of 100% organic cotton fabric. Fabric is dyed using a combination of food scraps and waste including leftover turmeric powder, scraps from red beets and purple cabbage. Once dyed, the fabric is also cut into strips, to create the reinforced, ready to weave bands of color. Bands are woven together into 5 segments (4 walls and 1 bottom of the bag), and stitched into their final form using a strong hemp yarn, making the piece functional for delicate use.
Modern, capitalist culture normalizes high contrast and toxic colors, creating an appetite for synthetic vibrancy. However, the materialization of this bag demonstrates a pleasure that can be found in softer, more natural aesthetic expressions. In appreciating hues found in nature, we can live in a simultaneously vivid, joyful, and environmentally responsible manner.

Materials: Gelatin bioplastic, agar bioplastic, scoby leather, mycelium
Ingredients: agar powder, clay, iron wires, thread, food dye, gelatin, glycerin, scoby mother, sugar, apple cider, green tea, tobacco, hot sauce
Processes: Fermentation, boiling, sewing, sculpting, blow-dry, carving.
Tools: Measuring cup, teaspoon, stainless stell and silicone molds, parchment paper, pots.
Timeline: 2 months

With these experiments I make use of some kitchen wastes to make some stable and strong bioplastic. I mixed all the ingredients with water and glycerin and boiled them for several minutes to form a thick liquid. After putting the liquid into the molds, the only thing left was waiting. It took me about one week to get all of them dried out. I also tried to freeze some of them. The texture of the frozen pieces got hard and stronger, and the bubbles inside the piece got much more visible than the others.

As a relatively durable product, lamps are frequently being disposed because outdated style. The material choice of lamp shade that manufacturers frequently choose are plastics, fabric, metal, glass, etc. Most of the lamp shades on market are not biodegradable. By introducing bioplastic into the producing of lamp shade, this project proposes an eco-friendly product which also has unique and pleasing aesthetic.
After experimenting with a range of biomaterials, the designer chose to work with agar-based bioplastsic for its malleability and translucence. The choice of use grey clay, iron wires, black thread, bioplastics partially dyes in black to create a zen, calm, silent vibe.

My original interest in bioplastics stemmed from their unique ability to disappear and degrade over time, an eco-friendly replacement to synthetic plastics, which last over 400 years, not easily broken down in nature. The original intention was to create bioplastic swaps for everyday items such as straws, tableware, and toys. Moving beyond commercial items, I was interested in the ways in which we can engage plastic as a feeling and all-knowing material itself and imagine its future.

Bioplastic
2022Nina Oleynik is a designer from Arlington, Virginia, and is currently based in Brooklyn, NY. She is an MFA candidate in Communications Design at Pratt Institute and is interested in design at the intersection of sustainability, functionality, and engagement. She is particularly interested in how we can use design to engage the public in sustainable futures in our every day. Coming from an undergraduate background in art history, she brings a historical design perspective to her work. She graduated from Colby College in 2018.

These are conversation cards for and to the future. These cards can be seen as relics of our present, and the future’s past. They are printed on bioplastic material, a natural, biodegradable material that has no permanence. The questions they ask are about a material that permeates forever – plastic will live on beyond the degradation of bioplastics, and beyond the degradation of individual humans. We can imagine what people will ask of the material when future populations find these cards in an archeological dig or if they wash up on a beach. What can we ask of something that never goes away and sees it all? What will we say about it in the future? What will it say about us?
Because today’s plastic largely has a synthetic makeup, we often forget that it also comes from fossil fuels, which are ancient plant and animal material from the Earth. This project utilizes bioplastic material made from gelatin and cornstarch in order to re-connect and re-engage the natural with plastic. In making this project and thinking about what stories plastic can tell, the designer wanted to make the ethical choice and use a prop that would not live forever like plastic, but biodegrade over time. Bioplastics have a unique ability to connect our past, present, and future. While these bioplastic cards are temporary, they remind us what permeates and what fades.

Materials: agar, glycerin,water
Ingredients:egg shell, grapefruit peel, shrimp shell, coffee ground, tea ground, blueberry, hawthorn, inedible parts of vegetables, mushroom, fishskin
Processes:mold making, boiling, cooling, drying, weaving
Tools: Scissors, pot, spoon, blender, kitchen scale, bowls, tinfoil paper.
Timeline: 4 weeks

I collected about 20 kinds of food waste from her kitchen over three weeks, such as unused moldy or dried vegetables and fruits, or the skin of certain things, such as shrimp shells, eggs and grapefruit peels, and other common food scraps. After extensive experimentation with the materials, 12 of them were selected for use. They were then blended, cooked, dried and finally made into bioplastics, which were eventually compiled together to form a set of tableware.
