Student-led Workshop
2025
During this in-class workshop, student Yura Kang demonstrated an experimental tattooing process on kombucha leather, a bacterial cellulose biomaterial crafted by fellow student Yi-Chun Kuo.
In this workshop, Yura demonstrated a tattoo process using transfer paper and ink, carefully transferring hand-drawn motifs onto the kombucha leather surface before applying ink with a tattoo machine. The workshop foregrounded questions of permeability, absorption, and resistance: how ink behaves on a non-animal, cellulose-based membrane; how the material responds to puncture and pressure; and how marks settle, bleed, or migrate across the surface.
