The "folding screen" in my project symbolizes privacy and distance, reflecting the bidirectional nature of interpretation and experience. With advances in technology, we can observe the world, yet we can also become objects interpreted by others. This screen allows us to conceal parts of ourselves, akin to dividing a reservation from an unobstructed view. Peering from within the folding screen reveals an even more enigmatic and intricate perspective.

To me, the "folding screen" signifies privacy, security, and belonging. When considering materials, I recalled the bitter smell from my childhood streets—emanating from traditional Chinese medicine being boiled between narrow spaces in old residential buildings. In Guangzhou, where my family's home is located, many of these buildings remain, with kitchens on balconies that fill the streets with aromas. Cantonese culture values healthcare, and families often boil Chinese medicine for consumption. Even now, the occasional scent in Chinatown evokes memories and identity. For this project, I envision using traditional Chinese medicine residue mixed with bioplastic to create translucent, scented panels, intertwining nostalgia and cultural identity.
